Why do I have smoke comming up the steering column of my ford probe?

I have a 99 ford probe that emits smoke up the steering column whenever the car is put into park or neutral. It just started doing this not to long ago. Would anyone know of a possible cause?

Thanks

-Skip|||you have a bare wire that is shorting out need to remove the place off the steering wheel and see what wire is shorting out and fix it (ford means found on road dead)|||Its Ford sorry but I've never heard of that before|||Sounds like an electrical short.If it smells like hot wires, that's what it is.|||Go get your engine fixed! Better, before it breaks down!|||shorted wire|||F ix

Ford Sucks.|||cuz u bought a ford lol!

jk, well not really but good luck with it, i'd stick with a japo car in the future|||it is a Ford - found on roads dead - enough said.|||FORD-- found on road dead- mainly from faulty steering|||Sounds like a short in the wiring - though what this has to do with being in neutral I'm not sure.|||ive seen this happen before in a VW but never found out what it was, it stopped after a wile....|||maybe you steered it too hard.|||Got to be an electrical fault see an auto electrician it shouldnt cost much to fix

ps

Fords are brilliant motors thats why there are so many around look at the new Mondeo perfect for anyone unless youre a badge snob, the original Focus wasway ahead of the rest one writer said it was better to drive than a BMW %26amp; wait till you see the new Fiesta ;-)|||yeah, check the wires in the steering wheel and column. take the wheel cover off [or have a mechanic do it if ur not good with cars], but be careful, because the airbag may deploy. Check the wires, maybe get a mechanics book on the probe. make sure the wires are correctly connected, and taped.
